Vin Diesel posted some early concept art for the new Riddick film by Patrick Tatopoulos on his Facebook page. He wrote:
Early Riddick concept art... first frame of a 2D Motion Choreography Study.
Grrrr...
The Furian... left for dead...
It looks nice. That could be some early version of a "mud demon" and the rock formation in the background looks like it's from the White Desert in Egypt that Vin already talked about.

According to Variety, Vin Diesel is finally going back to the future to topline and produce a third chapter in the "Chronicles of Riddick" franchise.
Universal will handle domestic distribution on the sci-fi film, which is titled "Riddick." Lionsgate is selling international rights at the Berlin Film Festival.
David Twohy -- who wrote and directed the first two films in the series, "Pitch Black" and "The Chronicles of Riddick" -- will helm from a screenplay he penned.
Plot details are being kept under wraps. But insiders say the third outing will hew closer in tone to the cult hit "Pitch Black" and will focus on the character of Riddick as opposed to the universe he inhabits, which was the case with the critically panned "Chronicles of Riddick." Still, "Chronicles of Riddick" earned $116 million worldwide and spawned a successful vidgame series.
Dates are being worked out for "Riddick" so as not to overlap with Universal's fifth installment of "Fast and Furious," which will shoot sometime this year with Diesel onboard to star and produce.

As the first decade of our millennium comes to a close, and just when we've started to hear the first news of Riddick's return to the big screen, the classic that started it all finds itself at the top of two online lists of the past 10 years' greatest sci-fi flicks.
Charlie Jane Anders writes in the io9 piece that Pitch Black is "nearly the perfect movie" and puts it at the top of a list of 20 including excellent films like Donnie Darko, Serenity, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (along with garbage like Iron Man, but hey, it's all opinion). Endymi0n also has good words in his SciFiCool.com post, with Riddick at the head of a pack of 10 (again, Serenity good, Iron Man bad); he then takes a shot at Chronicles and mentions the upcoming sequels.
I wanted to write that Pitch Black was in fact also the first wide-release science fiction film of the decade, but it turns out Supernova -- which Vin Diesel evidently thought sucked -- came out about a month earlier.

Well, Mr. Diesel recently posted some very interesting and good news about The Chronicles of Riddick sequel on his official Facebook page!
- The script is finished and supposed to be great (surprise ^^).
- They are scouting locations, among them is New Zealand (+ possible partnership with Weta).

Let's hope that the cameras will roll next year and that they can make the film they want to make!

Last month both Riddick films were released on blu-ray hi-def with little fanfare, but what's interesting is that on the "Chronicles of Riddick" disc, there is an exclusive commentary featuring Diesel and Twohy that can only be accessed with BD-Live capable players. Recorded in January of this year, Diesel and Twohy give an informative commentary about the film and mention more than a few tidbits about the sequels and the mythology they've been setting up. They don't go into great detail, but if you're familiar with the Riddick mythology you can get a sense of where things are going in the sequels they claim will take us to "Underverse" and "Furya", Riddick's home planet. It's funny listening to the two of them catch themselves from revealing too much because they are obviously excited about the future stories and want to talk about them. The following is an abridged transcript of their thoughts on the Riddick universe and how the sequels will be handled.
You can find the abridged transcript here:

Diesel's Riddick is a badass and is coming back to the big screen shortly in the next Riddick film with a rumored release date of 2010.
IESB has some inside information about the film to share.
Universal Pictures, the studio behind the franchise, is gung-ho about a Riddick sequel due to the huge tracking of Diesel's FAST & FURIOUS due out April 3 co-starring Paul Walker.
IESB is hearing the new Riddick film will be more down and dirty with less "fantasy epic stuff" to deal with. A bounty hunter/space pirate type of story line is expected.
The film will have a capped budget of around $35 million.
Expect an official announcement about the new film after FAST & FURIOUS opens big on April 3.

I already thought that Universal would wait with some official statement until Fast & Furious opens. Let's hope it opens really big ^^
35 million budget is okay (PB was like 22), down and dirty is fine (Vin already talked about the R rating for the second movie years ago) but I hoped for a bit more, like 50 or 60 million, because I'm curious to what that means for the storyline that they originally planned. Vin said that they wouldn't ignore the mythology of TCOR, yet it will be hard to 1) keep the visual continuity in terms of the Basilica sets and all the Necro stuff (maybe they still have parts of that + Necro armors etc.?) and 2) to realize the big battle stuff in the Underverse that Vin already talked about a couple of years ago ("War is the norm and it's a bloodbath there..."). I guess that they will still venture to the Underverse, but the details of the plot and the location will be different, because of the smaller budget (well, they could save money by building the same sets in Prague and not in Vancouver, for example). It will probably focus on Riddick and a small group of characters with some creatures like in PB without massive battle scenes, which can be a good thing, but I just hope that they don't really have to sacrifice original and interesting subplots that deal with Elementals for example. Maybe they will save some of that material and if the second one will be successful, they can increase the budget a bit for the third one...
Vin said on Jonathan Ross that he would love to get Judi Dench back... I doubt that, but I hope that Karl Urban and Thandie Newton will return, because the Vaakos are still quite important for the plot I think, if they really go to the Underverse and go deeper into Necromonger mythology. Otherwise they don't really need any of the cast back, except Diesel and maybe Kristin Lehman. But I think Riddick as the new Lord Marshal is too interesting in terms of the plot options to just drop it.

Vin Diesel revealed a few details to SCI FI Wire about a proposed third film in the Chronicles of Riddick series, which he confirmed is in the works.
David Twohy—who wrote and directed the previous two films, Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick—is currently writing the third installment, Diesel said in a conference call last week to promote his upcoming game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.
"We're going to find Riddick alone for the first part of the movie, barely alive, surrounded by carnivorous monsters who are trying to eat him," Diesel said in response to a question from SCI FI Wire. "So you'll see a futuristic Rambo-esque Riddick trying to survive."
Diesel added: "David Twohy is scripting the next installment of Riddick as we speak, and it's underway. The story will return to a Pitch Black [sensibility] while servicing the mythology that's been enhanced in Chronicles of Riddick."
It's a bit of surprise to hear that a third installment is in the works, given the critical and box-office drubbing the second film received. But Diesel remains enthusiastic. "It's so cool, this movie, I feel like I'm going to do it a disservice by trying to touch on it, but the answer is yes, we are working very hard on getting this next Riddick installment," he said. "You know how much I love this franchise and how dear it is to me, and you know how committed David Twohy has been to this franchise."
The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena will ship for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on April 7 in North America and April 24 in Europe.

Even after all these years, most behind-the-scenes and unused material from TCOR has yet to become public. BruceL has just uncovered some spectacular new photos of an unused scene on Planet UV and some wallpaper-worthy concept art, both from the same special effects artist. If that wasn't cool enough, he's also found some equally fresh shots of the scale model for the Crematoria prison cell block! Want more? How about Fernando Dominguez's teaser for his Escape From Butcher Bay fan trailer? How about Necromonger themed contact lenses? New tutorials for making Riddick's swingblades? BruceL found them.
These awesome finds also tell the Riddick fan universe one thing: there's a lot more where this came from and BruceL is on top of it! Check out out this amazing new material at BruceL's comprehensive Pitcher Blacker. If it's your first visit to PitcherBlacker, get ready to see several hours vanish instantly because it's the definitive online Riddick resource, with content vastly eclipsing the official Universal film site.

Vin Diesel told MTV News that they are still working on the two planned Riddick sequels:
“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film “Pitch Black.” “‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer ‘Pitch Black’ in the same way that ‘Lord of the Rings’ answered ‘The Hobbit.’”
Those are lofty goals indeed for a movie that was very poorly received when it opened in 2004, and had a mediocre performance at the domestic box-office (where it made just $57 million). Diesel, though, is undaunted, insisting that the long space between sequels has nothing to do with convincing others to get on board, and everything to do with wanting to get it right. (To be fair, “Riddick” performed well overseas, and also spawned a best-selling video game which many considered to be better than the movie.)
“Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it,” Diesel asserted. “It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.”
So where will Riddick go next? After taking the throne of the Necromonger King at the end of the last chapter, is there any doubt?
“Sooner or later we all end up in the Underverse,” he said of where we can expect the next chapter to take place, adding in a Riddick-like voice, “Sooner or later.”

If that title isn't reason enough to get excited, here are two better ones: 1.) new interviews with David Twohy, Judi Dench, Thandie Newton, Colm Feore, Karl Urban, Alexa Davalos, and lots of Vin Diesel 2.) new, never-before-seen Chronicles of Riddick film footage! That's right, this Sci-Fi Channel interview contains material unavailable anywhere else. Over the years, a number of sharp-eyed fans have noticed minor differences between the footage on the extended cut of the film, Universal's Riddick Sizzle Reel (courtesy of director David Twohy), some of the movie programs and the promotional trailers. Like most films, the production team filmed a number of alternative scenes that were later cut. These include Riddick using a ship locator on Helion Prime, Riddick being loaded onto the rocket sled on Crematoria and at least two variations of Riddick's initial "There are inmates and there are convicts" interchange with The Guv. Unfortunately, none of these scenes were ever included as extra content on any of the different DVD releases or bonus discs. Until the fans of the franchise generate sufficient and lasting demand for a more comprehensive release, footage cut from the film will remain stored and forgotten in the studio vaults, unseen except for rare appearances like this one. Which scenes? No spoilers, here! It's new Riddick footage. This is the first new footage from the movie since it debuted on June 11, 2004.
...and it's all thanks to new member Furyanthony! From the moment he contacted Riddickstyle with his amazing find, he's been incredibly accommodating at every step of making this footage available. It's easy to overlook what an exceptional amount of hard work goes into professionally editing out all the commercials, encoding, splitting, then enduring the outright tedium of uploading all 7 parts, not once but twice after Rapidshare dropped the original download URLs. Through it all, Furyanthony set a new standard for perseverance, hard-core dedication and extreme "Riddick-style" coolness!
